Jim Walpole and his wife Marilyn, were visiting Toronto for their cross-Canada train trip. Walpole, 77, tripped outside the King Edward Hotel and stubbed his toe. When he fell, his neck hit something sharp on a scaffolding pole and he started to bleed.
Marilyn Walpole told ABC News that she was terrified. She reportedly screamed for help and two men came to the rescue, one being Malkovich and the other Ben Quinn, a passerby. The actor pressed his fingers to the wound while Quinn held his head.
Quinn told The Toronto Sun that the Con Air actor seemed to know what he was doing. "We didn't know who he was. I just asked if I could hold the man's head and he said yes.
When Walpole asked Malkovich his name he replied, "My name is John and you are going to be all right."
The ambulance arrived shortly after and rushed Walpole to St. Michael's Hospital where he received ten stitches for his injury. "The emergency room doctor said that if the cut had been another eighth of an inch, I would have been in real trouble," the Defiance, Ohio resident told ABC.
The Ohio couple didn't recognize the Mice and Men actor, but were very grateful when they found out.
According to The Sun, the 59 year-old actor received an extra round of applause on stage Saturday at Toronto's Elgin Theatre. Malkovich is currently starring as Casanova in The Giacomo Variations.
