Paula Deen Fired After Racism Scandal
If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. In Paula Deen's case, she took the heat and got fired from it.
A lawsuit from a former employee brought to light that the now infamous chef had used racial slurs in the past.
Lisa Jackson, former employee of Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House, sued Deen and her brother, Bubba Hiers, alleging there was discrimination and a hostile work environment at the restaurant.
When asked if she had ever used the N-word, the 66 year-old celebrity chef replied, "Yes, of course."
Deen says that she was held at gunpoint while working at a bank in 1986. "Things have changed since the 60s in the South and my children and my brother object to that word being used in any cruel or mean behavior. As well as I do."
After she was a no-show for an appearance on NBC's Today show, Deen issued two apologies, via Youtube. "I am here to say that I am so sorry. I was wrong, yes. I've worked hard and I've made some mistakes. But that is no excuse."
Food Network didn't accept her apology. The officials at the channel elected not to renew her contract. A spokeswoman released a statement on Friday, June 21 that she had been fired.
"Food Network will not renew Paula Deen's contract when it expires at the end of this month."
