Donald Sterling Gives Wife Control Over Sale of Clippers
Donald Sterling has given wife, Shelly Sterling, control over the sale of the Los Angeles Clippers. Shelly wants to sale the team, but only on her terms. She still wants to own a percentage of the team.
Shelly and her lawyer, Pierce O'Donnell, have had discreet meetings with NBA commissioner Adam Silver to put an "amicable" end to the controversy.
However, the odds may not be in Shelly's favor. According to ESPN, NBA rules prevent the infamous owner to transfer control to anyone including an alternate governor. The board of governors would have to approve a new controlling owner and Shelly would not be approved.
The NBA filed charges to terminate Sterling's ownership of the team this past week. This would also severe any other ownership, including Shelly's 50%. The 80 year-old owner has until Tuesday, May 27, to respond to the charges. Max Blecher, Sterling's attorney, requested a three-month delay and was immediately denied.
Unlike Blecher, Shelly is taking things a step further. Sterling sources told TMZ that she is prepared to sue the NBA if they go forward with an involuntary sale. She will be filing papers to lay out her case on Tuesday.
In a release, NBA spokesman Mike Bass said, "We continue to follow the process set forth in the NBA Constitution regarding termination of the current ownership interests in the Los Angeles Clippers and are proceeding toward a hearing on this matter on June 3."
